About the Project
关于劳动与重量
Labour and weight are the fundamental actions and feelings of our existence. Amidst the rapid development of technology, we have begun to lose our demand and desire for physical labour; thus our sense and sensibilities on weight has also gradually weakened. “Labour and Weight: A travelling exhibition’’ is a site-specific artistic research and collaborative production between 4 artists and cultural workers in Pulau Pangkor, Batu Pahat and George Town. Deriving from different backgrounds of visual arts, theater and community/public participation the project aims to provide a platform for exchange between artists from different disciplines by carrying out their practises together as a temporal collective.
The project will start in Pulau Pangkor, Perak, an island famous for its fishery and tourism industries. Till date, some of the shipbuilders still practice the traditional, laborious method of building a ship. Initiated by Lee Mok Yee, a visual artist, the project is an extension of his installation with the shipbuilders at Pulau Pangkor in 2013. Aside from looking into the materiality of the traditional craftsmanship, the conversation of the project is extended to look into the repetitive act of the laborious work, its bodily memories, wisdom of building a ship, rituals, ways of living etc. The project aims to facilitate discussions among different practitioners while exploring the theme of labour and weight.

The project will start with a short residency in Pulau Pangkor and then move to a house in a small fishing village in Kampung Segenting, Batu Pahat, Johor as the first station for the travelling exhibition. The second station of the work will be resettled at Hin Bus Deport, a creative hub in George Town, Penang. The last station of the exhibition will be a concluding exhibition at a community stage in Pulau Pangkor. The culmination of this project will be a collaborative artwork presented at different local community spaces and exhibition halls.

该作品於2013年在第一届邦咯海岛节展出。李慕义在接触传统木造船厂后，对于造船师傅的劳动以及智慧感到震撼。渔船就像漂在海上的房子，但造船师傅且凭着自身经验，在没有大型机械的协助下，完成了一艘艘让渔夫安心出海的大型渔船。李慕义收集造船厂剩余的木块作为创作材料，且尽可能保留造船师傅在手艺过程中留下的劳动痕迹，制成许多小船。
《劳动与重量》作为一个起点，把四位艺文工作者聚集在一起，其中包括视觉艺术家李慕义、周盈贞，剧场导演蔡德耀以及艺术节筹划人高清玉，进而一起到邦咯岛驻地考察和创作。四人也从造船厂延伸到海上不同行业的发现，对“劳动”与“重量”有更广泛的讨论，透过各别不同的背景，强调交流、激荡、驻地创作的过程中去寻找跨领域更多的可能性。在交流的过程中，四人除了针对作品上的讨论，也发现各自对于创作模式、创作过程、艺术行政、宣传文案等都还有很大的讨论空间。而其讨论内容将以网站的形式记录，以作为日后的参考案例。

Lee Mok Yee is a Malaysia visual artist based in Kuala Lumpur. His work is process-focused and often interrogative of the aspect of ‘materials’ in art-making, choosing to work with ready-made or store-bought objects. Mok Yee re-arranges these materials as an act of interrogation against uniformity; pushing against the boundaries of function in mass-production, and in the re/arranging he questions the idea of moving within structures as an exploration of change and its futilities.
李慕义，马来西亚视觉艺术家。他的作品以材料的属性作为创作起点，并在创作的过程提出关联性的疑问。他的创作尝试以不同的方式转换现成品或工业品在现实生活的功能性与重复性，并且以雕塑、平面或装置的方式来呈现。

不露声色的观察，她叫Okui,但是她不慢。Tortoises are quiet, slow and tend to be shy but NOT this Okui.
Chew Win Chen aka Okui Lala is an artist and cultural worker based in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, Malaysia. Her practice spans from video, performance to public engagement. Okui‘s work explores themes of diaspora, home and belonging through the performances of domestic acts or vocational labour, such as sewing, cooking, conversing and building. Aside from teaching multimedia and moving images subjects at local college, Okui also facilitates visual workshop with NPO that works with placed-based education and different communities.
周盈贞（Okui Lala）生于槟城，其艺术实践常常採用跨越摄影、录像、表演和公众参与的自传式手法。创作藉由境内（domestic）行为或职业劳动的表演，来探讨离散、家园和归属等主题，这些表演像是：缝纫、料理、进行会话和建造。除了在本地学院 教授多媒体和影像科目，Okui 也与不同社区的非营利组织共同策划并指导摄影与视频的视觉工作坊。

Yeo Lyle is the, artistic director of Kosong Space, He is a theatre director and actor, who graduated from the National Taiwan University of Arts (Drama Department) and the New Era College Drama & Visual Department (theatre major). In recent years, he has explored different artistic expressions - to examine life's hidden layers, and to explore more precise art forms.
蔡徳耀，空坊kosong space艺术总监，剧场导演与演员。 毕业于国立台湾艺术大学戏剧系与新纪元学院戏剧与影像系。他近年尝试主办或参与不同类型的创作，企图刺探在默然表层低下翻搅抑或是瘫置的生命状态，探索更为确切的艺术形式 。

Cheng Gaik’s involvement in the local art scene began when she signed up as an art administrator in George Town Festival 2012. Since then, she has taken part in various art festivals, cross discipline performing art, community-based projects and visual arts exhibitions as art administrator. Often, Cheng Gaik finds the littlest thing most intriguing and she also believes that there is no single approach to art and embracing the unexpected is key.
自2012年加入喬治市藝術節(George Town Festival)後, 清玉就開始涉及藝術行政與管理， 穿梭於各個藝術節，跨領域的表演藝術，社區活動和藝文展覽。她對於周遭大大小小細節總是充滿好奇 , 深信艺术创作是没有单一的法则，生活上的各种意想不到的才是开启创作灵感的关键。
